Why convert MOV to MP4?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, used by iPhones, iPads, and macOS for video files. It's technically very similar to MP4 — they share the same underlying codec base — but MOV is associated with Apple's ecosystem and isn't supported as universally. Some older Windows computers, Android phones, and web platforms have trouble with MOV files.
MP4 is the universal version of essentially the same format. It plays on every modern device, uploads cleanly to every social media platform, and works in every video editor. If you've recorded a video on iPhone and need to share it with a Windows user or upload it to a service that won't accept MOV, MP4 is the answer.
Because MOV and MP4 share the same internal codec structure, the conversion is fast and lossless in most cases.
About MOV

About MP4
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the universal video container. It uses the same H.264/H.265 codecs as MOV but with broader software and hardware support.

When converting is the right call
- A Windows PC, smart TV, console or Android phone won’t play the file.
- You’re uploading somewhere that accepts MP4 and rejects MOV.
- You’ve finished editing on a Mac and need a delivery copy.
- The file needs to work for someone whose setup you don’t know.
MOV and MP4 are close relatives and normally hold the same H.264 video, so this is a remux — the video track is copied across untouched, quality loss is zero, and it takes seconds. One 13.8-second 2160 × 1064 clip changed by roughly 4 KB out of 20 MB here. Where a MOV holds something MP4 can’t carry — ProRes, an alpha channel, timecode tracks — those extras are dropped. Quality and file size
Most MOV files use H.264 video and AAC audio — the same as MP4. In those cases, the conversion is essentially a container swap, with no re-encoding and no quality loss. The output MP4 has identical quality to the source MOV.
