Why convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC has been the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 in 2017. It's roughly half the file size of JPG at the same visual quality, which is why Apple uses it. The problem is that HEIC works perfectly inside the Apple ecosystem and almost nowhere else: Windows, most Android phones, older photo editors, many websites, email clients, and printing services all reject HEIC files.

JPG is the universal photo format. Every device, every browser, every app, and every printing service in the world supports it. Converting HEIC to JPG is one of the most common tasks for iPhone owners who need to share photos with non-Apple users or upload them to services that don't accept HEIC.

About HEIC

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default image format on modern iPhones. It uses the HEVC compression codec to store photos in roughly half the space of an equivalent JPG with the same visual quality. It also supports advanced features like Live Photos and depth maps that aren't possible in JPG.

Quality and file size

JPG output is visually identical to the source HEIC. The output file will be larger — usually about twice the size — because JPG's compression is less efficient than HEIC's. EXIF metadata (date, GPS, camera info) is preserved during conversion.

Will my photo lose quality?

Visually, no. The conversion preserves the image at JPG's standard quality settings, which is indistinguishable from the original on virtually all photos.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses a more modern compression method (HEVC) that produces smaller files than JPG at the same quality. JPG needs roughly twice as many bytes to store the same picture.

Will EXIF data like date and GPS be kept?
